The Youth Opportunities Unlimited Center in South-Central Los Angeles, jointly operated by the Los Angeles Community Development Department and the Private Industry Council, has received a $2.7-million grant for three years from the U.S. Department of Labor. The YOU program offers qualified youths, ages 17 to 21, paid training in construction trades operated by the California Department of Transportation.
The 12-week course, which includes training in carpentry, roofing, plastering, tile setting and cement finishing, will pay students on a graduated scale while in training. Participants who complete the program will be placed in apprenticeships leading to construction jobs.
Residents as young as 14 in the target area, from Florence Avenue to Manchester Boulevard and from Vermont to Central avenues, may participate in educational services, recreation and sports and cultural activities, also offered by the newly opened YOU Center. For information, call (213) 627-9621.
