Change at ABT: After a stormy, 2 1/2-year reign, American Ballet Theatre director Jane Hermann suddenly announced her resignation Wednesday, effective Sept. 1. Hermann’s statement said that the company board offered to renew her contract, but, “It is time for me to move on.” The status of co-director Oliver Smith was not addressed in the mutually respectful announcements issued by the company and Hermann’s representatives. ABT’s board chairman said it was “premature” to discuss possible successors and said there have been no discussions with Mikhail Baryshnikov about returning to the company.
