Long Beach : Embezzler of Union Funds Sentenced to Probation
- Share via
A former union leader representing correctional officers at the Terminal Island federal prison has been placed on three years probation and sentenced to a month of community service for embezzling nearly $4,000 in union funds, according to authorities.
John Scott, former president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1680, had pleaded guilty in Long Beach Municipal Court to one count of embezzlement. The terms of his plea bargain call for Scott to repay the $3,900 he took from the union in 1989 and 1990.
The Labor Department opened an investigation of Scott in June, 1990, in response to complaints from suspicious union members. The union represents 105 correctional officers who work at the Terminal Island Federal Correctional Institution.
