A 16-year-old high school student died Thursday from a gunshot wound to the head suffered in a gang-related shooting in North Hollywood, Los Angeles police said.
The victim, Alan Choi of Northridge, was riding with a friend to a doughnut shop about 11:15 a.m. when a car occupied by four to six Asian gang members started to follow their car, Detective Steve Fisk said.
Minutes later, on Cantara Street just west of Coldwater Canyon Boulevard, a shot was fired from the suspects’ car at the vehicle in which Choi was a passenger, Fisk said.
“They exchanged some words and a passenger in the suspect car fired one shot striking the victim in the head,” Fisk said.
Choi’s friend, another 16-year-old whose name was not released, drove the injured youth to a nearby hospital where he died about five hours later, Fisk said. Detectives had not verified whether Choi belonged to a gang, he said.
