Top-Ranked El Toro Girls Fall

SANTA ANA — El Toro, Orange County’s top-ranked girls’ soccer team, lost its first game of the season Thursday, when No. 3 Edison scored an early goal and held on to win, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Excalibur tournament at Foothill High School.
Edison’s Lynne Thiel scored on a penalty kick two minutes into the game after being fouled on a breakaway. Edison goalkeeper Stephanie Hickey, who had 10 saves, and the Charger defense made the goal stand up. El Toro goalie Traci Jensen had six saves.
El Toro (8-1-2) rebounded in the third-place game, tying Marina, 1-1, but took third place with a 4-2 advantage in the shootout. Denise Kenyon, who joined teammate Sherri Kaminski on the all-tournament team, scored in the second half for El Toro. Rhiannon Tanaka, who joined teammate Sarah Heilman on the all-tournament team, scored for Marina (7-1-4).
In the other semifinal:
Encinitas San Dieguito 0, Marina 0 (San Dieguito advances on penalty kicks, 4-2)--After a scoreless regulation, San Dieguito eliminated the Vikings. Marina goalkeeper Jennifer Simmons had 10 saves. Tiffany Lona had four saves in the first half, and Alisha Davis had two in the second for San Dieguito.
