Court Pulls Cork on ‘Champagne’ Perfume

PARIS —  A Paris court has forbidden fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent from using the name “Champagne” for his latest perfume and ordered the scent’s cork-shaped bottles destroyed within a month.

The designer will have to pay a fine of the equivalent of $535 for each bottle sold after that period, the ruling said.

Presiding Judge Lydie Dissler ruled that using the label risked “weakening” the reputation of the bubbly wine that made it famous and could lead consumers to believe that champagne makers and the designer were in a joint project.
