Johnson & Johnson, FTC Reach Settlement Proposal on Ad Claims: The Federal Trade Commission said the company’s 1994 campaign for K-Y Plus Nonoxynol-9 Spermicidal Lubricant contained numerous false statements, including one saying that studies show that up to 18.5% of condoms will fail and another claiming that one out of six condoms will develop holes that are big enough for sperm or the AIDS and other viruses to pass through. New Brunswick, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson said there was no intent to mislead, but it acknowledged in the consent agreement that its statements could have been misconstrued. The firm agreed to avoid similar transgressions.
