Cheryl Salka of Ventura has been presented with a $1,000 check by the Soroptimist International Ventura club as part of the club’s effort to aid women attempting to further their education and reenter the work force.
The annual Women’s Opportunity Award is part of a Soroptimist program to help women who are often single mothers, member Kay Armstrong said.
The 38-year-old Salka, a Ventura College student, is a single mother raising three children. Her goal, she said, is to become an elementary school teacher and “give something positive to each of my students so they can take something positive with them into the community.”
For information on local Soroptomist chapters, call Armstrong at 656-5218.
