Word Games

In Judith Michaelson’s article on Candice Bergen (“ ‘Murphy,’ Off Deadline,” April 13), your relentless Language Police took it upon themselves to replace Bergen’s use of, presumably, the S-word with “crap.” (We know something was changed because “crap” was placed in brackets.)
I realize that a so-called “family newspaper” tries to shield the young and the unsuspecting from that which may shock or offend them. However, you’ve gone too far when you replace one word that is slang for “excrement” with another word that is also slang for “excrement,” especially when we all hear the original word dozens of times a day in movies, on TV, at school, in the home as well as in most public and private places.

Michaelson referred to Charlie McCarthy as a “puppet.” Charlie was not a puppet, he was a dummy!
