The 18th Annual “Swim With Mike” event that raises scholarship funds for physically disabled students will be held at USC today and organizers are hoping to top last year’s donation total of $240,000.
The event, which started in 1981 to support USC All-American swimmer Mike Nyeholt, who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, has provided scholarships for 30 individuals whose athletic activities were cut short by illness or accident.
“I couldn’t be more proud of something that started out of wanting to help an individual and now has helped many people and will help many more,” said Nyeholt, who can now walk with the aid of a cane.
The event starts at 8 a.m. at the McDonald’s Swimming Pool, reached by Gate 5 from Jefferson Boulevard at McClintock Avenue. Donations can be made to “Swim With Mike,” USC, Heritage Hall, Los Angeles 90089-0602.
