Panel Urges Raises for Council, Mayor

PASADENA — A council-appointed committee has voted to recommend that Pasadena’s first elected mayor be paid a monthly stipend of $1,500 and that council members be paid $1,000.
The City Council is scheduled to vote on the recommendation Feb. 26.
Council members and the mayor currently receive $50 per council or redevelopment agency meeting, totaling about $400 a month. That amount had been set by the City Charter. But in November, voters approved Measure O, which allowed the council-appointed committee to recommend new pay levels.
The council can either approve the recommendation or reduce it.
The Campaign to Preserve Pasadena’s Citizen-Council, which has campaigned to prevent council seats from becoming full-time jobs, declared the recommendation a victory.
“The committee has made a strong statement that Pasadena is to continue as a city of volunteers in which service on the council is not a profession,” said Vince Farhat, campaign spokesman.
