SIMI VALLEY — Rafael Berumen scored a school-record 53 points and Simi Valley High, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, beat visiting Agoura, 110-81, Friday night in a Marmonte League boys’ basketball game.
Berumen, who has signed with New Mexico, made 22 of 34 shots and seven of nine free throws to pass the previous mark of 52 points set by Don MacLean against Camarillo in 1988. Berumen, who left the game with 1:18 to play, had 24 rebounds.
“He had 42 points with five minutes left and we just made a decision to leave him in to give him a chance to get it,” said Coach Dean Bradshaw, who was a Pioneer assistant when MacLean scored 52.
Brett Michel added 20 points and seven assists, and Shaun Michel had 12 points and 17 assists for Simi Valley (25-2, 12-0 in league play).
Garrett Lepisto had 26 points for Agoura (13-13, 7-5).
