Delaying his arrival for training camp, New York Knick guard Latrell Sprewell was ordered Tuesday to pay about $105,000 to a man and woman injured in a highway accident that he admittedly caused.
But Sprewell was not ordered by a Contra Costa County Superior Court jury in Martinez, Calif., to pay the couple punitive damages, which could have been much more costly.
Arnulfo Perlas, 55, and Irma Feliciano, 54, were reportedly seeking total damages of $3.5 million, according to Sprewell’s attorney.
Nine members of the jury said Sprewell did not act with malice or oppression in the March 1, 1998, accident.
Perlas was awarded about $75,000 for economic and non-economic damages. Feliciano was awarded $30,000 mostly in economic damages.
It was not known when Sprewell, who had decided to await the verdict, would join the Knick camp in Charleston, S.C.

Isaiah Rider remained AWOL from the Atlanta Hawk training camp at Chattanooga, Tenn.
“We’re just waiting for him to contact us and show up,” General Manager Pete Babcock said.
Rider, a guard acquired in an August trade with the Portland Trail Blazers, failed to arrive Monday for the Hawk’s mandatory media day in Atlanta.
A representative from agent Arn Tellem’s office called Babcock on Monday afternoon and told him that Rider had missed several flights, but would attempt to be on an evening plane to Atlanta.
