Airport Upgrade

Re “$112 Million to Be Spent on Aesthetic Upgrade for LAX,” Sept. 30: People fly into a city to do business, to visit friends or relatives or for recreational purposes. Never do they first check out how attractive the airport may be.
Rather than waste $112 million on neon “LAX” signs and towering columns, let’s distribute the money to the hungry and homeless residents of this city. Better yet, give it to the teachers who can teach the next generation how to avoid being hungry and homeless.

Spend $112 million to “beautify” LAX and spell out its name in 40-foot-tall letters at Century and Sepulveda? Lame-duck Mayor Richard Riordan is spending too much time in the MTA building; he’s caught their edifice complex. Everybody knows where LAX is, and the theme building (with the help of the film industry) has already made LAX a “sophisticated, world-class landmark.”
Here’s an idea. How about putting $112 million in a kitty to extend the 105 Freeway to the airport? Or widen the airport offramp to two lanes? Or extend the Green Line a mile or two to serve the airport? How about some common sense?
