SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

President Clinton recently signed a bill that includes $1 million for the restoration of Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Great Stone Church. The money was requested by Rep. Ron Packard (R-Oceanside).
The ongoing $7-million restoration of the 193-year-old church includes retrofitting the structure to withstand earthquakes, stone conservation, erosion and water-damage repairs and waterproofing.
Mission officials said another $4 million was needed to finish the project.
“We hope this year’s first-time-ever government funding is the beginning of a public-private partnership which will help save the mission for future generations,” said Mission Director Jerry Miller.
