Today is New Year’s Day. The following services will be affected:
* MAIL: All post offices are closed; no mail delivery.
* BANKS: Most banks and savings and loans are closed.
* COURTS: All federal, state and county courts are closed.
* SCHOOLS: Most public schools are closed until Monday.
* GOVERNMENT: All government offices, except those providing emergency services, are closed.
* TRANSPORTATION: Rides are free on MTA bus, subway and light-rail lines until 5 a.m. today. All lines are on the Sunday schedule today. Metrolink is out of service today and Sunday. Information: (800) COMMUTE.
* TRASH: Trash collection for Los Angeles will follow its regular schedule.
* LIBRARIES: County libraries are closed through Sunday. Hours at individual cities’ libraries will vary.
