* Re “Approval of Project Is a Mishap,” Ventura County Perspective, Dec. 26.
If Washington Mutual wants to develop the 5,400-acre Ahmanson Ranch, it should pay back the $26 million the public paid for open space to facilitate the deal.
Five open-space parcels needed to become publicly owned before Washington Mutual could start developing the Ahmanson Ranch. All well and good. But opponents were told that the owners would “buy and donate” these five parcels. Apparently not so.
Not only did they not keep to their promise, the public paid more than $26 million in federal money so that Washington Mutual could make millions from the development.
If Washington Mutual is to receive its rights to develop on Ahmanson Ranch, we demand that it reimburse the public’s millions so other open space lands may be purchased throughout the Conejo Valley area.
