Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl acknowledged that he accepted free flights after leaving office, but he denied that they were a payback for political favors. Coming in the midst of a campaign funding scandal centered on Kohl’s acceptance of secret donations, his admission highlighted the ties between German politicians and business. Destinations included gatherings of conservative parties in Austria and Italy and a speech in Switzerland. Stern magazine said Kohl had supported Kirch’s dealings, including his effort to win European Union approval of a planned pay TV alliance.
