A Ventura County Jail inmate who is eight months pregnant escaped from a hospital clinic Tuesday morning after being allowed to use a bathroom unaccompanied, authorities said.
Rachel S. Fernandez, 22, crawled out a restroom window about 10 a.m. at the clinic in the 100 block of West Santa Clara Street in Ventura, said Eric Nishimoto, a Ventura County sheriff’s spokesman.
Nishimoto said Fernandez was one of two pregnant inmates taken to the county clinic for a weekly checkup. She was in an examination room with a nurse when she asked to use the restroom, he said.
Fernandez, who was in custody on narcotics charges, was wearing light blue jailhouse togs when she escaped.
