From Times Wire Reports
Voters decided to raise property taxes in Alabama’s largest school system amid warnings that high school football would be scrapped if the plan failed.
With 93% of the ballots in Mobile County counted, unofficial returns showed the proposal passing with 57,148 votes in favor and 44,421 opposed.
Supporters said the measure would raise about $27 million, helping to offset millions in state cutbacks.
Critics of the tax increase said the threat to eliminate football was a scare tactic and suggested the government tighten its belt.
