Explanation Sought for Suspect’s Escape

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich demanded an immediate explanation from county probation chief Richard Shumsky on Tuesday regarding how a 15-year-old gang member accused of murder managed to escape from custody during a visit to an orthodontist.
Daniel Ortiz was shackled at the ankles and under escort by two unarmed Los Angeles County probation officers Monday morning when he bolted and jumped into a car driven by an unidentified armed man, police said.
