Prosecutors charged seven senior officials in the killings of more than 100 civilians during East Timor’s violent break with Indonesia in 1999.
Former East Timor Gov. Abilio Soares and East Timor police chief Brig. Gen. Timbul Silaenwere are the most senior officials charged, said Barman Zahir, a prosecutor and attorney general spokesman. The list also included five other military and police officers.
The men are charged with “allowing or not preventing attacks” on civilians by soldiers or militiamen under their command, according to court documents.
