Capriati Gets Past Bartoli at Stanford

Third-seeded Jennifer Capriati struggled to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Marion Bartoli on Wednesday in a second-round match of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford.
“I’m here working on my game and playing tennis,” Capriati said. “You never know. Today I had a tough match. I have to get back to the mentality that I should be winning matches and I can still be No. 1.”

Tennis -- An article in Thursday’s Sports section incorrectly stated that the 2004 Indian Wells tournament would start the week of March 4. The tournament is scheduled to run from March 8-21, organizers said.
In another second-round match, fifth-seeded Jelena Dokic defeated Alexandra Stevenson, 6-3, 6-2.

Top-ranked Andre Agassi was seeded No. 1 in the men’s draw for the U.S. Open on Aug. 25-Sept. 7 after defending champion Pete Sampras officially withdrew.
Agassi, a two-time Open champion, was last year’s runner-up.
Juan Carlos Ferrero was seeded second, Roger Federer third and Carlos Moya fourth. Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick were seeded fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells and the NASDAQ-100 Open at Miami each are starting a week later in 2004, according to the WTA Tour, which released its upcoming schedule.
Indian Wells, a 10-day tournament, will start the week of March 4. Other changes include Scottsdale becoming a combined one-week tournament with the ATP, and La Costa has been moved to a Tier I event, up from Tier II. The Acura Classic will be moved back a week in 2004.

Hockey
The Mighty Ducks picked up the one-year option on goaltender Martin Gerber and re-signed restricted free-agent defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski to a one-year deal.
Gerber, 29, was 6-11-3 with a 1.95 goals-against average as the backup for Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Gerber will make $500,000 next season.
Vishnevski, who signed for $1.07 million, had two goals and six assists with 76 penalty minutes in 80 games last season for the Ducks.
The Ducks also signed defenseman Juha Alen, their third-round selection in this year’s draft, to a three-year deal, and free-agent goaltender Eddie Ferhi to a two-year deal.

Juli Inkster and rookie Lorena Ochoa each shot a six-under-par 66 to share the lead after one round of the Evian Masters in France.

A battery charge was dropped in West Virginia against former Miami of Ohio assistant Jon Wauford, who was accused of knocking down a Marshall fan after a game last season.
