Protesters Retreat at Ex-Dictator’s Urging

The remaining protesters who had caused chaos in Guatemala City headed home after former dictator Efrain Rios Montt asked them to halt demonstrations in his behalf, said an official of his governing Guatemalan Republican Front.
About 300 police officers at the Civic Center Plaza watched the departure of protesters who a day earlier caused the closure of government buildings and the U.S. Embassy.
The protesters want the courts to allow Rios Montt to register as a candidate for the Nov. 9 presidential election, but it is not clear whether his candidacy will be validated.
