* Nike Inc. posted a profit of $261.9 million, or 97 cents a share, in its second quarter ended Nov. 30, up from $179.1 million, or 66 cents, a year earlier. Revenue increased 11% to $3.1 billion.
* Rite Aid Corp. said its third-quarter earnings fell to $977,000 from $73.6 million a year earlier, when a tax benefit almost tripled profit. On a per-share basis, the retailer had a 1 cent loss after the payment of preferred dividends, contrasted with net income of 12 cents a year earlier. Sales rose less than 1% to $4.11 billion.
* PalmOne Inc.’s profit for the quarter ended Nov. 26 rose sharply on increased sales of new models of hand-held computers. Milpitas, Calif.-based PalmOne earned $24.7 million, or 48 cents a share, up from $2.6 million, or 7 cents, a year earlier. Revenue rose 39% to $376.2 million.
