The Bush administration said it was sending a senior official to the Middle East to revive peace efforts now that there was a new Palestinian leader.
State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said Assistant Secretary of State William J. Burns would head for Egypt, Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip today. Burns was in Brussels the previous day to meet with U.N., Russian and European members of the “quartet” of major powers working on Mideast peace.
Ereli said Burns’ talks would include security, the political process and economic reform.
