43 Projects Get Grants From Gates Foundation

Projects to develop needle-free vaccines for children, render mosquitoes incapable of transmitting disease and make cassava more nutritious made the cut for more than $435 million worth of grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The awards include a project to develop an inexpensive hand-held device that could diagnose a variety of illnesses.
In 2003 Gates called for proposals. The board whittled entries to 43 that members thought could succeed and make a difference to health in poor countries.
