Militiamen in eastern Congo killed at least 18 people and kidnapped at least 50 in a late-night attack on a village, a United Nations spokesman said.
Guerrillas calling themselves Rastas attacked the village of Ninja -- 50 miles west of Bukavu -- late Monday with machetes, said U.N. spokesman Leocadio Salmeron. Residents said rebels had severed the hands of some corpses.
The Rastas also wounded 11 people and kidnapped 50, disappearing into the forest-covered mountains, Salmeron said. Rastas are thought to be associated with about 10,000 Rwandan Hutu rebels still operating in eastern Congo.
