Animal Services hearing planned

The Los Angeles City Council has agreed to schedule a public hearing on city animal shelter workers’ criticisms of their boss, Ed Boks, general manager of L.A. Animal Services.
Council members -- who have no power over Boks -- moved to have their personnel committee hold the hearing.
Boks answers directly to the mayor. But shelter workers gave a petition -- called a “no-confidence” vote -- to council members in hopes of pressing them to influence the mayor. The petition calls for the ouster of Boks and Linda Barth, an assistant general manager of L.A. Animal Services.
About 60 shelter workers, joined by animal welfare advocates, showed up at the City Council meeting Tuesday to demonstrate their support for the petition. Several shelter staffers and animal advocates spoke.
“I’ve heard from employees and activists, and I’ve heard the cries for help,” said Councilman Dennis Zine, chairman of the personnel committee, which looks into labor relations and management issues in city government agencies.
