TV ratings: ‘Chicago P.D.’ rises with some help; ABC’s lineup falters

Most broadcast shows were down in the ratings Wednesday night, including Fox’s “American Idol” and ABC’s entire lineup, according to early numbers for Nielsen.
NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” bucked that pattern, delivering the biggest gain of the night.
“Chicago P.D.,” a crossover episode with “Chicago Fire,” drew a rating of 1.9 among the key demographic of 18- to 49-year-olds, 19% better than the last new “Chicago P.D.” and its best number since late February. About 7.2 million people watched overall.
Elsewhere on NBC, “Revolution” rose 8% in the coveted demo to a 1.4 and “Law & Order” fell 14% to a 1.8. In the advertiser-desired 18-49 demographic, a ratings point equals roughly 1.3 million viewers.
Fox’s “American Idol” -- featuring performances of viewer-picked songs from the final-five contestants and singer-songwriter Jason Mraz as a guest mentor -- hit a Wednesday low with a 1.8 in 18-49, but the series often rises a bit in the final national ratings. The singing contest averaged 8.6 million viewers overall.
“Modern Family” was again the night’s top show in 18-49, and that was about the only bragging point for ABC. “Modern Family’s” rating of 2.8 was down 20% from last week. “Suburgatory,” “Mixology” and “Nashville” all decreased double-digit percentages for a 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2, respectively, leaving “The Middle” with the smallest weekly drop -- down 5% to a 1.8.
CBS won the night with slightly diminished results from “Survivor” and “Criminal Minds,” which were both 4% lower than their last original episodes, each with a 2.2. “CSI” increased 6%, compared with its last new installment, to a 1.8. CBS averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 9.9 million viewers overall.
