Wrong-way driver hits cyclists in San Diego; 6 injured

Reporting from San Diego — Six people were rushed to hospitals for emergency treatment Tuesday night after a 49-year-old woman drove her Geo Prism into a group of 20 bicyclists on San Diego’s Fiesta Island, police said.
One of the cyclists hurt in the incident suffered broken ribs, a major vertebral fracture and internal injuries, police said. The others had injuries described as moderate to minor. Two people were treated by paramedics at the scene, officials said.
Witnesses said the woman was driving the wrong direction on a one-way road when she hit the bicyclists after rounding a “blind curve.” The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near a Boy Scout camp in the area.
The unidentified driver was also injured and is suspected of driving while drunk, police said. Fiesta Island is part of Mission Bay Park and is popular with bicyclists.
