Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives are investigating the shooting by El Monte police officers of an unarmed man early Friday, authorities said.
The shooting was reported at 3:57 a.m. in the 3500 block of Cogswell Road. Deputy Guillermina Saldaña said El Monte Police Department officers had responded to a call about a man with a gun.
“When the officers arrived at the location, they saw a man that fit the description of the person described in the call,” she said. “As the officers contacted him, the suspect reached into his waistband, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The man, whose name and age were not released, was wounded. He is hospitalized in stable condition.
“A weapon was not recovered at the scene,” Saldaña said.
