Gunman kills himself after hours-long standoff with police in South L.A.

A man who pointed a gun at police died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an hours-long standoff with SWAT officers in South Los Angeles early Thursday morning, authorities said.
The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead inside an apartment in the 6200 block of San Pedro Street, according to Lt. Chris Ramirez, an LAPD spokesman.
Officers responded to a report of gunshots in the area shortly before 1 a.m., and found the suspect brandishing a handgun and arguing with a neighbor, Ramirez said. The man may have pointed the weapon at the neighbor and toward an officer before barricading himself inside his apartment, Ramirez said.
SWAT officers were called to the scene, and police made several attempts to contact the suspect, according to Ramirez. But the man did not respond.
After several hours passed, Ramirez said officers heard a gunshot and sent a tactical robot into the building in the hopes of determining the suspect’s location. The suspect was pronounced dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics a short time later, he said.
No officers were injured in the incident. It was not immediately clear what time the man shot himself, according to Ramirez, who said the suspect did not fire at officers.
