CRAWFORD HALL - Joe DeMarco has been named volunteer assistant
coach with the UC Irvine baseball team, according to Coach John Savage.
DeMarco served in the same capacity at the University of Kansas for
the past two seasons, working primarily with hitters and infielders.
A standout player for the Jayhawks, DeMarco was the last .400 hitter
at Kansas, hitting .429 in 1997 as a senior and winning the Big 12
Conference batting title.
Prior to starting his new duties at UCI, DeMarco served as head coach
in the collegiate summer program of the Mankato (Minn.) Mashers of the
Northwoods League. He was an assistant coach with the Topeka Capitals
during the summer of 2000.
At UCI, DeMarco joins the staff of Savage and assistant coaches Jason
Gill and Pat Shine as the university reintroduces the sport, beginning
with competition in the 2002 season against the University of San Diego,
Jan. 25. UCI last fielded a team in 1992.
