COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College rallied for a tie in men’s
nonconference soccer, scoring a pair of late goals against visiting Long
Beach for a 2-2 standoff Thursday.
Coast (2-4-1) overcame a 2-0 second-half deficit. Pirates sophomore
Stanton Duke began the comeback with a goal in the 77th minute. Duke
caught the Vikings goalie off guard when he headed in a pass from Chance
Daniel.
OCC goalie Joey Balbas, who recorded eight saves, rescued himself from
a loss four minutes later, booming a direct free kick past the Long Beach
wall and into the left corner of the goal to knot the score at two.
Long Beach is now 1-2-1.
Before the start of the game, the teams and spectators observed a
moment of silence in honor of the victims of Tuesday’s terrorist
tragedies.
The Pirates return to action Tuesday at 4 p.m., when they host
Palomar.
