Looking back, 5 years ago this week.
It’s a record day as Corona del Mar High wide receiver George Sumner
catches five touchdown passes to tie an Orange County record for TD
receptions in one game. Sumner catches six passes for five touchdowns and
154 yards to lead the Sea Kings a 54-0 victory over Garden Grove.
Sumner’s scoring receptions come from 65, 33, 14, 3 and 19 yards out and he grabs two touchdowns in the first quarter when the Sea Kings jump out
to a 26-0 lead. CdM running back Tom O’Meara churns out 147 first-half
yards and two touchdowns on 10 rushes, including a 64-yard breakaway to
give CdM an 18-0 lead with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Sea Kings
Bryan Bergey (two), Mike Finn, Mark Hatfield and Justin Shea recover
Garden Grove fumbles to spearhead a defense that allows just 55 total
yards in the first half.
It takes more than five hours to do it, but the Newport Harbor girls
tennis team pulls off the most significant score of the decade by
hammering nationally reputed Peninsula High, 14-4. Peninsula comes into
the marquee matchup with a 122-game winning streak. “Obviously we are No.
1,” Sailors Coach Fletcher Olson says. “We’ve felt underrated all along,
but we showed the world we have some talent on our team. Teams better be
looking out for us.” Erica Nelson sweeps all three of her singles matches
from the No. 3 position, including a 7-6 tie-break win. Newport Harbor’s
No. 1 doubles team of Emily Baker and Brooke Taylor also sweep as they
battle through two hard-fought tie-breakers.
The Orange Coast College football team ends a seesaw battle with
Pasadena when Nate Bennett kicks a 19-yard field goal with five seconds
remaining to give the Pirates a 20-17 victory. OCC running back William
League, who runs for 175 yards on 26 carries, sets up the game-winning
field goal.
The Estancia football team grinds out a 29-7 victory over Buena Park
as the Eagles feature two 100-yard rushers. James Dawkins compiles 100
yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, while Manu Tanielu runs for 107
yards and one touchdown on 10 carries.

The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team rallies for an 8-6
victory over El Toro. The Sea Kings fall behind 3-0 in the first four
minutes, forcing Coach John Vargas to run a zone defense. And CdM fires
back. In less than four minutes remaining in the first half, Ted Simpkins
scores twice and Brent O’Brien fires in a penalty shot in the closing
seconds before halftime to knot the score at 5. The scoring run extends
into the second half as CdM scores six unanswered and the defense shuts
out El Toro with Sea King goalie Robbie Pike, who records 11 saves.
The Newport Harbor girls volleyball team opens its season with a
five-game victory over Dana Hills. Maureen McLaren pounds 25 kills to
lead the Sailors to the 6-15, 15-9, 15-10, 11-15, 15-13 victory. Sally
Newberry adds 11 kills and Misty May tallies five kills and six service
aces, including aces on two of the final three points to clinch the win.
The Sailors overcome a 9-4 deficit in the fifth game.
The Newport Harbor football team does some stomping with a 34-0
victory over host Ocean View. Newport’s line dominates on both sides of
the ball, enabling running backs Brandon Finney (127 yards on 20 carries)
and Tony Mancuso (73 on 15) to run wild. Quarterback Greg Williams makes
the most of his first start (in place of Mike Ofer, who is out with a
broken collarbone). Williams, a 5-foot-11 136-pounder caps a four-play
drive with a well-executed play-action roll out, hitting wide-open tight
end Jason Lawson from 3 yards out to make it 14-0 with 2:32 left in the
half.
Long Beach City College feels the wrath of the Orange Coast football
team as the Pirates stomp the Vikings, 26-0. The Orange Coast defense
allows just 65 total yards, the least by a Pirates defense since Nov. 19,
1983, when Compton manages only 34 total yards. OCC running back Adrain
Steen runs for 111 yards on 20 carries.
