Marauders open season with 2-1 win

The Marauders, an Under-14 boys’ team out of AYSO Region 143, scored
early and came up big on defense Saturday to earn a hard-fought, 2-1
victory over the Splash in their season opener.
An early first-quarter goal by Stryder Huff was followed by a score by
Kenny Rosen, giving the Marauders a 2-0 advantage. From there, the
defensive efforts of backs Josh Bebek, Josh Saylor and Joe Hole, helped
limit the Splash to one goal. David Campo had several key saves and had a
shutout intact until the fourth period.
The strong play of midfielders Philip Battis, Scott Foster, Armando
Gonzalez, Taylor Haug, Michael Long and Afour Louhmadi contributed to the
victory.
In girls’ soccer action:
HB Lightning 3, Irvine Lasers 2
HB Lightning 2, Irvine Defiance 1
Janet Peterson scored two goals, including the winning goal with just
minutes left on the clock, as the HB Lightning defeated the Irvine Lasers
for its first victory of the season.
Lauren Stimmler also scored for the girls’ Under-16 Bronze team of the
Commonwealth Football Club.
In defeating the Irvine Defiance, 2-1, the Lightning dominated play
but it took Peterson scoring in the final minute of to seal the victory.
Caitlin McGinnis scored the first goal, Megan Bell, Aubrie Fuette, Danae
Lucas, Lindsey Rodgers and Krista Thompson anchored the defense, and
Blair Connors, Tara Fox, Jessica Goud, Hilary Pohlman and Samantha
Serrano also keyed the win.
