Loose Ends

Time Warner Cable announced this week that it will kick off its Orange

County prep football television coverage this weekend. The cable station

will feature several games involving local schools this season, including

two involving Huntington Beach High.

The Oilers Oct. 28 game against Edison will air first on Oct. 21 at 1

p.m., then be replayed at 6 p.m. on Oct. 23. Its Oct. 26 game against

Fountain Valley will be shown first on Oct. 28 (1 p.m.) then again on

Oct. 30 (6 p.m.).

Ocean View also will receive air time. Its Nov. 2 showdown with

Westminster will be broadcast Nov. 4 (1 p.m.) and again on Nov. 6 (6

p.m.)

Edison High’s boys’ water polo team, which finished runner-up at last

weekend’s Poway Tournament, will compete in the South Coast Tournament.

The prestigious tournament, now in its 33rd year and hosted by Newport

Harbor High, begins play today at four different locations (Newport

Harbor, Corona del Mar, El Dorado and Tustin highs)

If you made the long trek north to Oxnard Saturday to see the

Huntington Beach High Oilers take on Hueneme in nonleague football

action, you got to see Oiler running back Pat Harrigan’s standout

performance. The 6-foot, 215-pound junior tailback/outside linebacker,

rushed for 219 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-14 rout of the Vikings.

Harrigan and the Oilers go after victory No. 2 Friday when they travel

south, this time, for a nonleague battle with Capistrano Valley.

The Oilers recorded their only shutout of last season against the

Cougars, 17-0.

Tonight, Ocean View will be looking for its first win when the

Seahawks travel to the Santa Ana Bowl to face Century in nonleague play.

Century, which opened the season with a 34-7 win over Bolsa Grande, did

not play last week against John Glenn due to the terrorist attacks that

hit our nation. Last year’s score: Ocean View 28, Century 6.

Edison also returns to action Friday after having last week’s game

with Capistrano Valley canceled. The Chargers go up against a Dana Hills

squad that stands 2-0. Its most recent victory a 34-13 win over Santa

Ana. The Dolphins will have plenty to contend with against the Chargers

and will need to find a way to patch up its defense against the run,

which yielded 248 yards to Santa Ana. The two week layoff shouldn’t

affect Edison. Last year’s score: Edison 42, Dana Hills 21.

Marina will attempt to rebound from Saturday’s 28-0 shutout loss to

Newport Harbor by hosting Mayfair. The Monsoons struggled last Friday to

defeat Lakewood, 14-7. Look for Marina to bounce back and resemble the

Vikings who scored 40 points in week No. 1 against Paramount. They might

not score 40, but they’ll score. Last year’s score: Marina 21, Mayfair

It lasted 31 games and the better part of three years, but finally,

the Golden West College football team can celebrate: the streak is over!

The Rustlers ended a losing streak at 31 games Saturday by holding L.A.

Valley without a touchdown in a 14-3 victory. Congratulations to the

Golden West football program. May your “new” streak prosper.
