COSTA MESA - Robbie Jones, a junior transfer from Orange Coast
College, set a new 6,000-meter record for the Vanguard University men’s
cross country team Saturday at the Claremont Invitational.
Vanguard, scheduled to compete at the San Diego State Aztec
Invitational, attended the ‘Tour O’ the Park’ at Prado Park in Chino
after the cancellation of the San Diego meet.
Running a 6K race instead of the normal 8K, Jones finished sixth out
of 109 runners, and first among the Lions.
His 6K time of 19:09 broke a seven-year old VU record of 19:47, set by
Jason Schaefer in 1994.
Only two Golden State Athletic Conference runners finished ahead of
Jones in the meet confirming the fact that Jones is a potential contender
for a national qualifying berth.
Jones’ performance, which earned Lion of the Week honors, helped
Vanguard finish seventh as a team on Saturday.
