NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High field hockey team produced
a shutout, 2-0, not only in score, but in shots, dominating Glendora in
nonleague action Thursday.
The Sailors (2-1) outshot the Tartans (0-3), 22-0, at Harper Community
Center.
Newport senior Kelly Duffield scored on a breakaway 7:24 into the
game. And, junior Kaley Nix iced the decision, taking a pass from junior
Athena Vasquez and putting it away with about three minutes remaining.
Thanks to the Sailors’ defense, sophomore goalie Amanda Wittman had an
uneventful day, while Glendora goalie Megan Smith turned back 14 shots.
Newport returns to action Saturday in the Orange County Invitational
at Marina High School. The Sailors will play three games Saturday, facing
Santiago at 8 a.m., Fountain Valley at 10 a.m., and Marina at noon. The
tournament will end Sept. 29.
