Looking back, 5 years ago this week:
Estancia High’s girls water polo team earns its first-ever
victory, an 8-4 decision over nonleague visitor Ocean View.
Sophomores Cassie Calkin and Lauren Mayo score two goals apiece for
the Eagles (1-2), who outscore the Seahawks, 3-1, in the second period before pulling away in the second half. Jessica Schwartz,
Jenea Gudvangen, Somer Flaherty and Katie Menden also post goals for
Coach Jenny Sheldon’s hosts. Goalkeeper Anna Rassmussen makes four
saves.
Following a 10-year hiatus, Jim Weeks returns to coach the Costa
Mesa High softball team, a squad he coached from 1984-88. Weeks
replaces Rick Buonarigo, whose scheduled return after a two-year
absence is interrupted when he becomes head coach at Orange Coast
College.
Estancia High’s boys basketball team wins its 10th-straight game,
a 73-67 verdict over host Aliso Niguel in Pacific Coast League
action. Estancia senior guard James Dawkins ties his season-high
point total (28) to lead the Eagles (14-5, 3-0 in league). Senior Sam
Nelson collects 18 points and eight rebounds while Ryan Simpson adds
15 points and eight boards. The Eagles trail, 45-36, in the third
quarter before going on a 15-0 run, capped by Dawkins’ steal of an
inbounds pass and subsequent layup with 2:48 left in the third
quarter.
Newport Harbor High’s boys basketball team holds Corona del Mar to
its lowest point total in 54 games of the series in a 50-26 Sea View
League victory. Newport guard Matt Jameson leads all scorers with
eight points as CdM doesn’t break the 20-point barrier until 2:58
left in the game. CdM’s Dennis Alshuler’s seven points lead the Sea
Kings, whose only lead comes at 3-2, 2:28 into the contest.
Costa Mesa High’s boys soccer team upsets rival Estancia, 1-0 on
the Eagles’ field, in a Pacific Coast League game. Mesa improves to
5-4-3 while Estancia, ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division
IV, falls to 6-4-3, 0-1-1 in league. Junior midfielder Derek Waldron
punches in the game’s only goal in the 61st minute after controlling
a high bounce and beating two Estancia defenders. Mesa goalkeeper
Cesar Porcayo records his second consecutive shutout, making nine
saves. Jose Perez, Mike Culp, Grant Nelson, Arturo Olmos and Waldron
all help shut down Estancia’s offense.
