Shadowlands

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team (10-5) remains

unbeaten in five Sea View League games by beating Back Bay rival

Corona del Mar, 56-53, though the Sea Kings give the Sailors a scare.

Hot shooting by sophomore forward Mandy Clayton gives the Sailors 14

unanswered points to start the fourth period after trailing by three

at the end of three quarters. CdM fights back from an 11-point

fourth-quarter deficit to pull within 52-48 when Kari Dietrich scores

with 2:21 left to cut Harbor’s lead to 54-51. That’s when reserve

guard Sara Amoli sinks a three-pointer with 1:52 left. Newport forces

five turnovers in the last eight minutes and shoots 58% (7 of 12)

from the field in the fourth quarter after only shooting 28% (14 of

49) through three periods.

Estancia High’s boys basketball team (10-8, 3-0 in the PCL)

extends its winning streak to four games with a 76-70 league win over

favored Trabuco Hills (14-4, 2-1), ranked No. 3 in Orange County. The

Eagles shoot a sizzling 18 of 26 (69%) from the field in the first

half. Five Eagles score in double figures, including Jim Faulkner (21

points, nine rebounds and three steals). Clay Frenz hits a jumper

with 3:20 remaining to give the Eagles a 72-63 lead and ends with 15

points followed by Chad Kinney and Joel Warrick with 14 and 13

points, respectively.

Senior guard Molly Flint scores a season-high 36 points while

Nikki Ricci collects a career-high 14 as the CdM girls basketball

team defeats Tustin, 60-47, in a Sea View League contest. The Sea

Kings (9-4, 2-2) open with a 12-0 run and never trail. Rosalie Kane

(15 rebounds) and Kari Dietrich (11) lead CdM underneath.

Newport Harbor, giving away 24 points on forfeitures, takes CdM to

the limit before falling, 43-27, in a Sea View League dual wrestling

meet.
