Sunset hoops races heat up

Tommy Grady recorded a double-double, and Edison High handed

visiting Marina its initial Sunset League loss last weekend in a

64-54.

Grady scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds, Steve Cornett scored

14 points and Nick Snowden scored 13 for the Chargers.

James Lambert’s 21 points paced Marina.

Both teams hit six three-point shots. Lambert led both teams with

three, and Cornett, Snowden and David Huff each hit three.

In other Sunset League action, host Huntington Beach outscored

Esperanza by seven points in the final period to pull away to an

eventual 48-40 victory.

Brandon McLaughlin and Bret VanVoorhis each scored 15 points for

Huntington.

In earlier Sunset League play, Marina got the best of host

Huntington Beach, 49-40, getting a game-high 21 points from James

Lambert and 10 more from Matt Brennan.

James Bailey’s 15 points paced the Oilers.

Edison fell to Fountain Valley, 58-53. The Chargers’ Tommy Grady

led all scorers with 21 points and Billy Braun had 10.

Ocean View used 21 points by Matt Sargeant, 14 more by Casey Ortiz, 11 by Greg Okwudibonye and 10 by Bear Wurts to rout visiting

Santa Ana, 68-51, in Golden West League play.

In girls’ basketball, Edison outscored host Marina, 35-11, in the

second and third quarters to pull away to a 50-26 Sunset League

victory.

Rebecca Kepilino scored 20 points, Valerie Katayama had 10, and

Lelia Abufarie scored eight for the Chargers.

Sarah McLeod’s eight points topped Marina.

Edison also kept archrival Fountain Valley winless in League play

as the Chargers downed the visiting Barons, 48-35.

Kepilino netted a game-best 22 points, and Katayama was the other

Charger to hit double digits with 11 points.

Marina began the week with by edging visiting Huntington Beach,

39-37.

Sara Marquez and Rachel Maulit each scored nine points, and Alison

Budzinski and Mimi Kaneko each had eight for the Vikings.

Katia Hadj-Hamou nailed three, three-point shots and finished with

13 points to lead the Oilers.

Huntington Beach also fell to Esperanza, 52-32. Alisha Mountford

and Mo Finn each scored nine points for the Oilers.

In Golden West League play, Ocean View dropped a 63-49 home game

to Westminster. Elyse McNeff, Vanessa Alderfer and Erica Williams

each scored 12 points, and Alderfer and Williams each hit a pair of

three-point baskets for the Seahawks.

In boys’ soccer, Ocean View was blanked by Santa Ana, 4-0, and

edged Estancia, 4-3.

In girls’ soccer, Huntington Beach downed Marina, 3-1, and fought

highly-ranked Esperanza to a scoreless tie.

Jessica Abdou led Huntington with two goals against Marina, and

the Oilers’ stingy defense shut down Esperanza, led by Allison

Louie’s 10 saves in goal.

Defending league champion Edison played Fountain Valley to a

scoreless tie, but bounced back to shut out Marina, 3-0.

Ocean View was a 4-0 winner over Westminster.

In girls’ water polo, Sunset League play found Marina edging

Huntington Beach, 6-5, and Edison defeating Fountain Valley, 9-6.

Ocean View fell to Westminster, 4-2, in Golden West League play at

Golden West College. The team defeated Tesoro No. 2, 11-3, and lost

to Santa Ana Valley, 9-5, in tournament action.
