Warriors roll past the Sailors

Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team didn’t have a quarter
where it scored in double figures and host Woodbridge High ran the
Sailors out of the gym Thursday night, 69-25, in a Sea View League
game.
“Our girls were afraid of that red and gold, they just weren’t
ready to play (Thursday),” said Newport assistant Mike Kilkenny.
“(Woodbridge) is very good at running the floor and they got a lot of
second, third and fourth shots on an offensive set.”
The Warriors (4-1 in league) outscored the Sailors (11-11, 1-4 in
league), 23-4, in the first quarter.
Newport had 25 turnovers to Woodbridge’s 12. Lauren Stepanski
paced the Warriors with 19 points as every Warrior who played scored.
Vanessa Miller led Newport with nine points and Jillianne
Whitfield chipped in five points with nine rebounds and three steals,
both team highs. Lindsay Woller grabbed five rebounds.
Newport, which has lost four of its last five, hosts Foothill
Tuesday.
“We have to get back to work and the girls’ confidence back,”
Kilkenny said.
