* GIRLS SOCCER: Newport Harbor High senior Amy Burlingham scored
two goals and senior Sabrina Couch added another to lead the Sailors
girls soccer team to a 3-1 Sea View League victory over host Foothill
Tuesday in Santa Ana.
Newport (5-8-5, 3-2-1) led 1-0 at halftime, after Burlingham
converted a penalty kick because of a hand-ball violation by Foothill
in the 28th minute. Burlingham scored an unassisted goal in the 51st
minute. Then, nine minutes later Couch found the back of the net
after finishing a cross by senior Tricia Orth.
The Knights avoided a shutout, scoring in the final minute.
Newport Harbor junior goalkeeper Kara DeMille recorded seven saves.
Estancia slips past Westminster with 1-0 win
* BOYS SOCCER: Estancia High’s host Eagles got a goal from Luis
Mendoza at 76:57 to claim a 1-0 Golden West League boys soccer win
over Westminster Tuesday.
Mendoza took a cross in front of the goal, made a couple of moves
and punched it in from 3-4 yards out, in a hard, physical match,
according to Coach Steve Crenshaw. Sergio Madrigal had one save to
preserve the shutout. The Eagles are 6-8-1, 3-5-1 in league and
within range of a CIF Playoffs berth.
Mustangs drop 2-0 decision to Ocean View
* BOYS SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High boys soccer team remained
winless after losing, 2-0, to Golden West League host Ocean View
Tuesday.
Mesa goalie John Ruiz stopped four shots. Coach Eugene Day said
the Mustangs (0-17-1, 0-9-0) had six viable scoring opportunities in
the first half. “We cannot finish,” Day said.
Oxford Academy dismisses Sage Hill, 2-1
* BOYS SOCCER: A header by host Oxford Academy’s Kyle Stanfield
in the 60th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Patriots
defeated Sage Hill School, 2-1, in Academy League boys soccer
Tuesday.
Stanfield scored off a cross from Kyle Shield in the 60th minute.
Sage Hill evened the score in the 50th minute when Trevor Granger
scored off an assist from Zach Friedrichs. Ethan Tanney made 10 saves
in goal for Sage Hill (6-4-2, 2-2-2 in league).
Lightning captain Julian Smith-Newman strained ligaments in his
knee and didn’t play Tuesday, said Lightning assistant coach Chris
Ellsasser. Smith-Newman is expected to miss a week, according to
Ellsasser.
Lightning drops 7-1 match to Oxford
* GIRLS SOCCER: Amy Werblin scored off a free kick in the last
five minutes but it was not enough against visiting Oxford Academy as
the Patriots beat the Sage Hill School Lightning, 7-1, in Academy
League girls soccer action Tuesday.
Barbara Cormalis and Whitney Fountas each scored two goals to lead
Oxford (10-1-1, 4-1) in league.
Laura Gordon had 13 saves in goal for Sage Hill (3-10, 2-3) in the
teams’ first meeting this season.
Lightning bests Estancia, 11-6
* GIRLS WATER POLO: Sage Hill School junior Hayden Hutchison
scored five of her game-high nine goals in the third quarter to help
the Lightning pull away from host Estancia for an 11-6 nonleague
girls water polo win Monday. Sophomore goalie Kira Neal had 12 saves
for the Lightning (8-8), which also received two goals from freshman
Stephanie Roeser.
Marilyn Reich had four goals to pace the Eagles. Katie Mahan
recorded nine saves.
OCC’s Herring commits to Wagner College
* COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Orange Coast College offensive tackle Stephen
Herring left last weekend for Wagner College in New York City (Staten
Island), where the second-team All-Orange Empire Conference honoree
will play next season after accepting a scholarship, said his mother,
Dawn Herring.
Herring, a second-team JC Grid Wire All-American, is also a
candidate to be the Orange County chapter representative into the
National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame, announced at a
dinner March 10 in Anaheim, said OCC Coach Mike Taylor. The award
recognizes academic and athletic achievements. Herring had a 3.68
grade-point average at Coast, Taylor said.
OCC place-kicker Rob Pate was inducted into the hall last year.
Herring, a national scholar at Sonora High in La Habra, will
likely major in sports management at Wagner, Dawn said. He also
received a full scholarship to Liberty Christian in Lynchburg, Va,
she added. In other football recruiting news, OCC center Ed Fane has
committed to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, a Division I-A
school.

UCI’s Slobounov Co-Big West Athlete of Week
* COLLEGE DIVING: UC Irvine freshman Anton Slobounov has been
named Big West Co-Athlete of the Week for his performance at the UCLA
Diving Invitationals.
Slobounov came in third place in the three-meter competition with
427.85 points for 11 dives and fourth in the one-meter competition
with 530.35 points for 11 dives.
Anteaters’ Gabbe Big West Player of the Week
* COLLEGE WOMEN’S HOOPS: UC Irvine senior guard Wendy Gabbe was
selected as the Big West Player of the Week after leading the UCI
women’s basketball team to victories over Pacific and Cal State
Northridge.
Gabbe, the Anteaters’ lone senior, hit 6 of 11 from three-point
range in two games. For the week, she averaged 20.0 points, 4.5
rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. She played 74 minute
without committing a turnover. It is her second career honor and the
fourth for a UCI player this season.
