Forcible robbery at Bank of America
A trio of black males, and possibly one black female, forcibly
robbed the Bank of America mini branch in the Albertsons market on
Edinger Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday
The robbers drove up in a stolen 1993 black Honda accord. One man,
described only as a black male in dark clothing waited at the
entrance of the store, while another black male described as
5-foot-11 to 6-foot, wearing a dark sweatshirt, dark pants, white
athletic shoes and a nylon mask headed to the bank with his hands
hidden. Witnesses said he jumped over the counter and strong-armed
the teller. He then jumped back over the counter and fled to the car,
which may have been driven by a black female.
The robbers then fled to a nearby back alley where they left the
stolen Honda and got into a green mini van similar to a Ford
Aerostar, said Huntington Beach Sgt. Mike Kelly. They were last seen
heading northbound on Gothard Street.
Police have lead on hit-and-run case
Police have identified the man killed by a hit-and-run driver on
Pacific Coast Highway on Jan. 18 as 21-year-old Cary Raush of Long
Beach.
Raush was leaving Bolsa Chica State Beach, where he had been
partying with friends, on foot when he was struck. A passing motorist
saw his body at the edge of the road at about 9 p.m. and called the
police.
After asking the public for help, police received information that
led them to impound a blue 1984 Toyota Tercel registered in the city
of Norwalk, which they believe to have been involved in the accident.
The possible driver of the car has been contacted, but no arrests
have been made yet.
Freak accident occurs in driveway
A 62-yar-old woman was killed last week when she struck two
vehicles and a house while trying to back her SUV out of the
driveway.
After she hit a wall trying to back up, the driver accelerated
forward in a 360-degree turn and struck two vehicles in other
driveways, knocked over a mailbox and crashed into the corner of a
house, firefighters said.
The only other passenger, her 4-year-old grandson, was strapped
into a car seat in the back, and suffered no injuries.
She suffered injuries to the chest and neck and died shortly after
being transported to the UCI Trauma Center. She was not wearing a
seat belt.
Authorities are investigating the accident.
Fire department employees honored
Ten fire department employees were honored for recent promotions
at the Fire Department’s third annual Badge Pinning Ceremony Jan. 16
at the Gothard Street station. Tribute was also paid to acting Fire
Chief Duane Olson.
At the ceremony, Olson presented badges to fire engineers, fire
captains, battalion chiefs and a division chief. About 100
firefighters, city staff, family and friends attended the event.
Surf City welcomes new police officer
Police Chief Kenneth Small swore in Huntington Beach’s newest
police officer last week. John Branch was transferred from the Los
Angeles County Sheriff’s Department where he worked as a jail deputy
and performed in-court services.
Branch will be assigned to a field training officer in the patrol
bureau for training.
