Breakers win, tie, fall into second

* AYSO REGION 97: The Newport Beach Breakers defeated Corona del
Mar, 3-0, but tied South Irvine, 2-2, to fall into second place in
girls under-10 Silver All-Star soccer action in AYSO Region 97.
Shannon Boler scored two goals in the second half to add to Josie
Jogwe’s single tally in the first half. Jogwe scored her goal off a
corner kick from Maria Swift.
The Breakers received strong play from Courtney McIntosh at center
half, Lexi Jenkins and Kelly Rorden at marking back and Christy
Olhaver in goal.
In the afternoon game, South Irvine scored the first two goals to
build a 2-0 lead in the first quarter but the Breakers came back with
a goal by Boler (assisted by Tempest Blaine), just before the half.
In the third quarter Swift tied the game as the Breakers blasted
shots on the Irvine goal, but couldn’t get the game-winner. Monique
Conant (marking back), Lauren Terry (keeper) and Claire Castillo
(halfback) played solidly.
Kelly scores three goals
* CLUB ROLLER HOCKEY: Chase Kelly scored a hat trick and added
two assists to lead the Newport Harbor varsity club roller hockey
team to a 7-3 win over Fountain Valley Tuesday at the Gretzky Center
in Irvine.
Collin Insley added two goals while Kevin Wong and Cory Adler each
scored one goal to help the offense.
Kyle Matthews, Alex Crouse and Calvin Anderson collected assists
for Newport and goalkeeper Elliott Thacker with defenders Vincent
Mungo and Preston Kelly held Fountain Valley to just 18 shots.
Storm pounds Phantoms
* CLUB ROLLER HOCKEY: The Storm opened its Squirt Club Division
(under-12) play with a 7-4 victory over the Phantoms at the Gretzky
Center in Irvine in roller hockey action.
Mitch Merten, Garrett Haar and Max McCourt each had two goals and
Ryan Iverson notched a single tally. C.J. Piz collected two assists
with Blake Kelly supporting with one.
Solid back checking from Justin Peters and Andrew Hodel forced
Phantom players to take low percentage shots.
Goaltender A.J. Allen stopped 19 of 23 shots.
