Len Martin founds the Costa Mesa Globe; soon after, he purchases the Herald and creates Costa Mesa Globe-Herald
1948
Walter Burroughs and David Ring purchase Costa Mesa Globe-Herald
1955
Costa Mesa Globe-Herald moves to office at 330 W. Bay St. in Costa Mesa
Paper begins coming out twice a week
1957
Paper begins coming out three days a week
1959
Burroughs debuts Newport Harbor Pilot, sister paper of Costa Mesa Globe-Herald; buys right to name “Pilot” from Seal Beach newspaperman Admiral J. R. McKinney
1960
Newport Harbor Pilot begins coming out five days a week
1961
Costa Mesa Globe-Herald and Newport Harbor Pilot combine into Orange Coast Daily Pilot
1962
Burroughs sells Orange Coast Daily Pilot to Times Mirror Co., which owns the Los Angeles Times; Burroughs stays on as publisher
1964
Robert Weed succeeds Burroughs as publisher; paper expands coverage from Seal Beach to San Clemente
1983
Times Mirror Co. sells Orange Coast Daily Pilot to Ingersoll Publications Co., a Connecticut-based holding company that owns a number of papers nationwide
1988
Ingersoll sells Orange Coast Daily Pilot to Minnesota-based Adams Communications Co.
1989
Orange Coast Daily Pilot begins morning circulation after years of hitting newsstands in the afternoon
Robert E. Page, former head of Boston Herald and Chicago Sun-Times, takes over as publisher
1990
Paper suffers layoffs as circulation, advertising revenue drop
1991
Page’s partners at Page Group Publishing Inc. oust him as publisher of Orange Coast Daily Pilot
Paper changes name to Newport Beach-Costa Mesa Pilot and briefly comes out three days a week
1992
Paper resumes daily schedule and changes name to Daily Pilot
1993
Times Mirror Co. buys Daily Pilot and packages it with Los Angeles Times; editors eliminate national and world news and narrow focus to Newport Beach and Costa Mesa
Tom Johnson steps in as publisher
1994
Daily Pilot wins 11 awards from California Newspaper Publishers Assn., including best community newspaper in the state
2000
Tribune Co. purchases Los Angeles Times and Daily Pilot
2004
Daily Pilot moves out of office at 330 W. Bay St., into Times Orange County building at 1375 Sunflower Ave. in Costa Mesa
