Viking wins his weight class

Marina High’s Chad Scheaffer was named the lower weight MVP Saturday at the 2008 Beach Bash Wrestling Tournament.
The two-day event, which started Friday, was at Edison High.
Scheaffer, a junior who carries an overall grade-point average of 3.9, won his 135-pound weight class. He recorded three falls, one technical fall and one decision over two days of competition.
“I went in there not knowing how I’d do, tried my best and all the hard work paid off,†Scheaffer said. “ The tournament was well run and a lot of fun.â€
Danny Reyes of Hesperia (189-pounds), who had four falls and one decision, was named upper weight MVP.
Bakersfield’s “A’ team won the overall team title. The Drillers finished with 225 team points to easily outdistance runner-up Brawley, which finished with 174 points.
Bakersfield was second, overall, at last year’s event.
The final team placements for the local prep teams in the tournament were as follows: Marina “A†(eighth), Edison “A†(12th), Ocean View (tied for 26th), Huntington Beach (30th), Marina “B†(45th), Edison “B†(46th), Edison “C†(tied 55th) and Edison “D†(tied 60th).
In addition to Scheaffer’s feats, several other local athletes turned in strong performances: Victoria Anthony, Marina (103-division, fourth); Marco Fratantoni, Marina (112, eighth); Derek Burdette, Huntington Beach (130, fifth); Victor Diaz, Edison “A†(140, sixth); Aaron Lopez, Edison “A†(145, seventh); Weston Hawkins, Edison “A†(189, fourth); Jimmy Banh, Ocean View (189, sixth); Charles Burks, Edison “A†(215, eighth); Kody Afusia, Ocean View (275, fourth); Marcus Patterson, Marina (275, seventh).
