Barons and Chargers headed for Hawaii

Aloha.

That’s what the Edison and Fountain Valley boys’ prep basketball teams said to the mainland Tuesday as they departed for Hawaii.

The Chargers and Barons are playing in the Maui Winter Classic, a five-day tournament that begins today at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Edison opens the tournament today against Farrington of Oahu. The Chargers are participating in the tournament for the third time in six years.

In other boys’ tournament action this weekend, Marina concludes play Saturday at the Beckman Tournament. Beginning Monday, Marina, Huntington Beach and Ocean View will participate at the Orange Count North-South Challenge at El Toro High.

In girls’ basketball, the Ocean View tournament continues today and Friday and concludes with championship game action Saturday. Meanwhile in Arizona, the Huntington Beach, Marina and Edison squads are competing in Phoenix at the NIKE Tournament of Champions. The event, the largest girls’ basketball tournament in North America with more than 100 teams entered, begins today and continues through Monday.

Huntington headed to Arizona sporting a 5-0 record and takes on a 6-0 Desert Vista team that Huntington Coach Russell McClurg said is “one of the top teams” in Arizona.

“We are playing with great poise and confidence right now,” McClurg said of his Oilers, who come into the tournament averaging eight three-point baskets per game.
